NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — New Orleans fire crews responded to an Algiers home on Thursday, March 14, after a man cooking breakfast noticed his stove had caught fire.

The New Orleans Fire Department reported crews were dispatched to a home at 2900 Pittari St. around 9:36 a.m.

At the scene, crews said they found a two-story home with heavy flames coming through the roof and surrounding the back of the home.

NOFD crews said they learned a man had safely escaped the home before firefighters arrived.

According to the NOFD, the man said he was in the process of making breakfast when he saw flames coming from the back of his gas stove.

NOFD officials also said, “The homeowner also stated that he didn’t have a working phone, which likely contributed to a delay in notifying 911 and attributed to the fire’s development prior to NOFD arrival.”

The NOFD reported that 18 fire trucks carrying 41 firefighters were used to put out the fire, and it was under control by 11:09 a.m.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

According to the NOFD, “The American Red Cross has been requested to the scene to assist the homeowner with temporary shelter.”
