NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department is participating in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign for the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

According to a news release, the campaign will run through the holiday weekend and aims to prevent drunk driving through increased visibility and enforcement.

NOPD officials said the department is “expanding its efforts” during the holiday weekend.

“The goal is to save lives. Even a small amount of alcohol can affect driving ability,” said NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick.

NOPD officials said drunk driving can lead to jail time and the loss of your driver’s license.

The NOPD offered the following tips to prevent drunk driving:

  • Have a designated, sober driver before drinking.
  • There are options to get home safely, including having a designated driver, calling a taxi or using a rideshare service.
  • Call law enforcement if you see a drunk driver on the road.
  • “Always drive 100% sober.”
  • “If it’s your turn to be the designated driver, take your job seriously and don’t drink.”
  • “If you have a friend who is about to drink and drive, take the keys away and let a sober driver get your friend home safely.”
