NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A 13-year-old with a rare cancer was gifted an autographed Derek Carr jersey by the New Orleans Police Department and Cops 8.
We first told you about a boy with a rare cancer who made a wish list. On that wish list is to meet Saints’ Quarterback Derek Carr.
Now, the New Orleans Police Department, the non-profit Cops 8 and “Patch” the miniature horse, with the mounted unit, are doing something special to surprise the boy.
13-year-old Davion Miles, who lives in Colorado, is a huge Derek Carr fan.
“He’s one of the best players I’ve ever seen play in the NFL,” Miles said. “I’d be really excited to meet him.”
“I’d appreciate for him to put in the effort to actually see me, that would make my day,” he said.
Now, Miles is one step closer to Carr.
“We wanted to do something for Davion to tell him everyone’s on his side, whishing the best for him and we care about him and wanted to lift his spirits today,” Jessica Dietz, president of Cops 8 said.
The NOPD’s 8th District, the non-profit Cops 8 and NOPD’s Mounted Unit’s newest mascot, “Patch” the one-eyed miniature horse all wanted to give Miles something.
“We’re here to present Davion with a signed autographed jersey of Derek Carr,” Dietz said.
Dietz went on to say, “I had actually planned on auctioning off the Derek Carr jersey for a fundraiser but thought this was more important. The smile this could bring to Davion was more important than that.”
8th District NOPD Captain LeJon Roberts said “We are wishing blessings and well wishes to Davion. We want him to know we have his back 100 percent.”
Roberts went on to say, “No better way to present Davion with an autographed jersey from our champion of smiles, ‘Patch.’ He is instrumental in sharing love and joy. We want to humanize the badge.”
Davion and his family are hoping that people share his story on social media, so hopefully one day he could meet Carr.
