NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department announced Wednesday, an arrest was made in the investigation surrounding the deadly shooting that claimed the life of Rapper Charlie Whop.
The shooting happened on Wednesday (March 8) at the corner of North Broad Street and St. Bernard Avenue. Officers in the area say a citizen flagged them down to alert the of the shooting.
The shooting happened as the result of a reported fight between the suspect and the victim, according to the NOPD.
Responding officers found the man’s body laying on the neutral ground and says he suffered several gunshot wounds. Friends and associates of the artist the victim’s identity, 49-year-old bounce artist Charles Davalie, also known as Charlie Whop.
Through investigations, officers were quickly able to identify 27-year-old Jamarin Barnes as the person responsible. An arrest was issued 24 hours after the shooting, said officers, on the charge of second-degree murder.
NOPD Homicide Capt. Kevin Burns says Barnes left the city but with assistance from the NOPD Violent Offender Warrant Squad and Bogalusa Police Department, he was located in Bogalusa, Louisiana, and arrested without a struggle. He is awaiting extradition back to New Orleans for booking.
