Updated dashboard gives New Orleans residents new transportation safety insights

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The City of New Orleans has released an updated transportation safety dashboard designed to provide residents with information about where and how often crashes happen in the city.

According to the New Orleans Department of Health, the NODH worked with the New Orleans Police Department, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and the Office of Information Technology and Innovation to make the updated dashboard.

NODH officials said the updates allow residents to see specific details about transportation incidents with data including the month, date and time, location of where crashes happen and the option to view crash data in different categories including personal vehicles, pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles and commercial vehicles.

They said the dashboard will also show data that highlights where crashes that result in injuries or fatalities happen frequently, and behaviors involved.

“Traffic safety data is often presented in tables and charts but when combined with GIS technology, we can visualize where in the city these crashes are occurring. This allows us to analyze what behavioral and environmental factors are contributing to an increase in crashes in those areas.” said Caroline Demay, Enterprise GIS Manager at City of New Orleans Information systems management.

According to the NOHD, data collected from the dashboard showed a 75% increase in roadway fatalities and a 107% increase in bicycle crashes with serious injuries from 2019 to 2022.

NOHD leaders said the data included in the updated dashboard will allow residents and public officials to make more informed transportation safety decisions.
