NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — New Orleans law enforcement is tackling the topic of crime fighting in the city.
At a press conference held Thursday (Feb. 2), New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Michelle Woodfork stated violent crimes have been increasing throughout the country and the city is not exception to the upward trend.
“In 2022 we experience an increase in violent crime ending the year with 266 murders.
Deeming New Orleans a major with one of the highest murder rates per capita in the United States,” said Superintendent Woodfork.
In an 11 page report Woodfork highlighted the gun use were in a majority of the crimes and that the NOPD has also witnessed a rise in property crimes that have lead to higher rates of auto thefts and burglaries.
The strategies comes in the midst of the Mardi Gras season when officers are expected to have a greater population in New Orleans than normal and during a recent crime spike regarding carjackings.
