NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — WGNO, owned by Nexstar Media, was founded 28 years ago in 1996. Every year, Nexstar stations across the country volunteer within the community as a way of giving back to celebrate what is known as Founder’s Day.
WGNO staff volunteered at Giving Hope, which distributes groceries to families in need and truly knows what it means to help others.
“I’m helping in giving back, and I really think we come from a city that is a really giving city. Being part of that process and being able to give back, I really do enjoy,” said Robert Anderson, a WGNO Account Executive.
One by one, these grocery carts filled with food are heading to cars. Food that gives hope every time it is distributed, twice a week.
Volunteers from WGNO and Giving Hope are giving out 200 carts of groceries to families in need, and in a month’s time, they do a thousand carts of groceries.
“A lot of them don’t have any money to purchase food because of the prices in stores. It really helps out,” said Giving Hope Supervisor Dawn Joseph.
To feed a community, it takes a community.
“WGNO is always supportive. We love it when you guys come out,” Joseph said.
“Giving Hope is generous with what they provide to the people in need. The quality of the products, the amount is truly remarkable,” said General Manager of WGNO John Cruse.
“It puts dinner on my table and it lasts for at least a week or two,” Latricia Reaux said.
Water, fruits, canned goods, pizza and all kinds of produce are just some of the foods being given out.
“Pizza, pizza, it is a pizza party, and that’s amore, and that’s what it is all about, love,” said Bill Wood, a WGNO reporter.
“Volunteering all in a good day’s work,” Anderson said.
