SLIDELL, La. (WGNO) — The Slidell Police Department is on the scene of a crash between a vehicle and an Amtrak train on Monday, April 1.
SPD officers said the crash happened at the intersection of Gause Boulevard (Highway 190) and Front Street (Highway 11).
Officers report that a Chevrolet Suburban “came to a rest on the railroad tracks prior to the crash.”
They said the driver of the Suburban told SPD officers the car had inadvertently shifted into park when the train was approaching, preventing it from moving off the tracks.
According to the SPD, “Currently, no evidence supports that the Suburban drove around the crossing arms.”
SPD officers said the Amtrak was driving north at the time of the crash, and passengers were uninjured.
The occupants of the Suburban, identified by the SPD as a Slidell couple, were taken to a hospital for minor injuries.
SPD officials said the intersection will be closed until further notice.
The investigation is ongoing.
