INDEPENDENCE, La. (WGNO) — A lot of TV shows and movies make forensics look easy, but as students who are part of the forensics program at Tangipahoa Parish School System Advanced College and Career Magnet Center are finding out, the process is comprehensive.

“We start them off totally as if they are a patrol officer on the street,” Forensics Instructor at TPSS Advanced College and Career Center Joseph Bennett said.

“They learn to pull fingerprints off individuals. We cover things like blood splatter analysis,” Bennett said.

Wednesday’s lessons are hair analysis and shoe impressions.

The process of hair analysis involves students using their hair to make slides to look at under the microscopes.

While the importance of shoe impressions are to indicate whether or not the suspect could’ve been at the scene of the crime.

Students like Parryis Jenkins feel it’s a lot more complicated than you may think.

“I’ve always been interested in these types of things since I was a kid,” Jenkins said. “Just some things are a little more detailed than what people see or think of forensics on TV.”

“There’s a high interest in it with all the CSI shows. It makes you a better person and a better citizen to understand how forensics actually work and not just what you see on TV,” Bennett said.
