New Orleans hosting electric vehicle day

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — On Saturday, September 10, New Orleans will host its EV Day 2016 event at the Whole Foods Market at 300 North Broad Street.

The event will include city council members as well as electric vehicle (EV) experts and advocates.  The event will run from 10:00 to 2:00 and will include charging demonstrations and a drawing to win a Nissan LEAF for a weekend.

New Orleans EV Day is part of the National Drive Electric Week which runs Sept. 10-18.  The eight day campaign will include events around the country aimed at raising awareness of the financial and environmental benefits of electric vehicles.

Earlier this week, the New Orleans City Council passed a motion encouraging to use of electric vehicles.  Supporters of electric vehicles in city government are hoping New Orleans will eventually install fast chargers on public property and add electric cars to the city’s fleet.

A growing number of car makers are beginning to manufacture EVs.  WGNO profiled some electric car options in this report in 2014.
