METAIRIE, La. (WGNO)- A local artist is showing New York City some love with a memorial for the fallen heroes from the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the attacks.
News with a Twist Reporter Kenny Lopez shows us this special sculpture created by Garrett Haab of Sequoia Outdoor Supply in Metairie.
Haab is making sure that 15 years after the terrorist attack, we never forget. He’s doing so with this memorial sculpture he created.
“Its about the fallen victims. 9/11 changed everyone’s lives,” he said.
Haab doesn’t want the memorial to be something that brings people down, but something uplifting. For the past five weeks he collected scrap metal and welded it together.
“100 pieces of steel all welded together. I grounded and polished it to give it a finished look,” he said.
While collecting the scrap metal, he even made a serendipitous discovery.
“Took some random pieces from the scrap yard and didn’t notice until it was being put on the truck that the steel came from New York steel. The cool thing is that the beams say New York steel on them. Really touching that a sculpture dedicated to New York came from New York,” Haab said.
This memorial sculpture is 7 feet tall and weighs 500 pounds. The Jefferson Parish Fire Department will house the
“Really is a neat piece. I wish I could keep this thing,” he said.
The memorial sculpture will be officially unveiled at 9 a.m. Saturday at the New Orleans Stair Climb, which honors fallen firefighters. The event takes place at 400 Poydras Tower.
