NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – The New Orleans Fire Department has confirmed five people, three of them children, died in an early morning house fire on Tuesday.
The fire started in the 4300 block of S. Miro Street, near Napoleon, sometime after midnight. One man made it out of the home alive, his condition is unknown at this time.
Officials say the two adults who died were the mother and grandmother of the three children who also perished in the fire. The surviving resident was the children’s father.
We have learned the home had no working smoke detectors.
Those children were students at Andrew Wilson Charter School, which is located across the street from their house.
Fellow students were asked to stay home for the day. Those who already arrived will be sent home at noon.
School officials are planning a candlelight vigil. The school is also collecting donations for the family.
Those who wish to make cash donations for surviving family members can do so by visiting: www.gofundme.com/wilsoncharter. Checks may also be dropped off or mailed to:
