NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – The NOPD will join a long list of police departments in providing body cameras to officers, and within the next few weeks you can expect to see hundreds of officers wearing them around town.

Officers began training to learn how to use the cameras this week. More than 400 members of the force will be issued their cameras once they complete training.

The camera program comes at a cost of 290-thousand dollars a year over the next five years. Superintendent Ronal Serpas says it’s well worth the expense.

“These body cameras give us the next step in American policing, to ensure transparency and accountability”

All of the footage will be uploaded to cloud storage at the end of every officer’s shift, and recordings will also include the 30 seconds before the officer turned the camera on.
