It is one of the feel good stories of Saints training camp.

Saints head coach Sean Payton likes the work being done by defensive coordinator Dennis Allen. Allen took over the Saints defense after coordinator Rob Ryan was fired after 10 games last season.

All Allen has to do is resurrect a defense that allowed the most points in the NFL in 2015. Here’s what Payton said about Allen, who is on his second tour on the Saints coaching staff.

The Saints defense won the day Wednesday at practice. Watch as rookie safety Vonn Bell, a second round pick out of Ohio State, intercepts a long pass thrown by Garrett Grayson.

One of the standouts of training camp is defensive tackle Tyeler Davison, a 5th round pick in the 2015 draft from Utah. Davison was running with the first unit Wednesday, along with rookie first round Sheldon Rankins.

“He’s been winning the get off. He’s someone is exceptionally quick in the nature of how he plays. I think we saw that on college film,” said Payton. ” That pad level and that get off from him in this defense has helped him. He done some things that standout.

The Saints also activated cornerback Keenan Lewis from the physically unable to perform list. Lewis, who had hip surgery, played in only 6 games in 2015.
