SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – LAGOP, the Republican Party organization for Louisiana, has endorsed a candidate to run for the state’s newly created Sixth Congressional District.

As it was redrawn during a contentious legislative session, the district stretches along the I-49 corridor from Baton Rouge to Shreveport. State Senator Cleo Fields announced his candidacy in June.

Sen. Garrett Graves, who currently holds the seat, announced that he would not seek re-election once the dust settled in the back-and-forth lawsuits regarding the district. The Republican party will put its support and resources behind Senator Elbert Guillory.

Guillory graduated from Norfolk State University and Rutgers Law School. He served in the United States Navy for four years and started his career in public service at age 29. Guillory represented District 24 in the Louisiana Legislature.

In the news release announcing his candidacy, Guillory said, “I am pleased and honored to be the unity candidate with such support from across Louisiana. I promise that no one will outwork me and that I will always stand for God, country, and common sense.”

The party believes this seat is crucial to holding the GOP’s “razor thin” majority with 220 Republicans and 213 Democrats in the House of Representatives, and as a result the party made what it calls an “unusual unifying move” stating, “LAGOP has led the state’s many Republican groups and organizations to coalesce behind this one candidate.”

Louisiana’s Sixth Congressional District will be decided during the Presidential Election on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
