New Orleans (WGNO)–Senators have passed a bill that would cap the TOPS program at its current rate.

Under the proposed measure if tuition goes up the TOPS scholarship wouldn’t follow suit.

That means, in a few years, students may have to start paying some of their tuition.

Governor Edwards supports the move.

Edwards said, “You have to make decisions that are hard decisions but, ultimately in everyone’s best interest. I will– like i voted for the bill last year, i will sign the bill this year.”

However, in the short term, the state may still have to make temporary cuts to the program.

Yesterday, lawmakers proposed another bill to ensure all qualified students would at least get a portion of their scholarship next year.

Governor Edwards says he also supports that plan.
