New Orleans (WGNO)–Today, a state Senate committee is set to debate a bill that would cap tuition payouts through TOPS.
Right now, TOPS scholarships cover 100% of the bill.
But with years of tuition increase and rising enrollment the cost of the program has skyrocketed.
This bill would put a cap on the program starting this year.
Raising the cap would take a vote by the full legislature.
A committee member said, “We trying to make sure that the tops program is sustainable and that it’ll be available not just for students starting college next year and this year, but for future generations of students.”
This means in the future students would need to pay a portion of their tuition.
Yesterday, a measure that would strengthen requirements for students seeking TOPS failed.
It would have required them to get at least a C+ average to be eligible for the scholarship.
