NEW ORLEANS, LA – Upturn Arts is partnering with Positive Vibrations Foundation and special guest Big Chief Bo Dollis, Jr. to host its first annual Yuletide Gras from December 19 – December 23 at Nola Spaces – 1719 Toledano Street.
This all-day arts enrichment camp, to be held over winter break, will prepare young artists for Mardi Gras 2017.
Each day, Big Chief Bo Dollis, Jr. will teach traditional beading techniques and drumming of the Mardi Gras Indians. In addition, young artists will work one-on-one with local krewes and organizations each day – including The New Orleans Creole Belle Baby dolls, The Nola Cherry Bombs, and The Disco Amigos – to create Mardi Gras-themed stocking stuffers, parade choreography, and bags for parade throws.
“We are so excited about this camp, it is something I have wanted to do for years,” Dollis said. “Mardi Gras is a holiday unique to New Orleans with so many traditions. At this camp, our students will explore Mardi Gras in new ways and share their family traditions with others.”
Camp runs Monday – Friday from 9:00am – 4:00pm. Forty spots per day are available for young artists in first grade and up. Daily drop-in rates are available. For additional information and to register, please visit www.upturnarts.org.
In 2016, Upturn Arts has reached over 500 youth, with 50 percent attending programs on full scholarship or with financial aid.
