Tom Benson in court today

New Orleans (WGNO) – Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson was in a New Orleans courtroom today for a hearing that could decide if he maintains complete control over his two franchises.

“I’m still walking, so I feel good,” Benson joked as he left court Monday evening.  The hearing is closed to the public and media.  All of the associated documents are also sealed, and there’s a gag order in the case.  “I can’t talk about nothin’.  I just feel good,” Benson added.

Family members, including his daughter Renee and granddaughter (and one-time Saints executive) Rita Benson LeBlanc, are fighting for their share of the team.

Benson cut them off in January when he announced plans to leave the bulk of his estate to his wife, Gayle.

The judge has closed the courtroom to the public and press because testimony will include Benson’s personal medical information. Testimony is expected to include results of Benson’s mental evaluation ordered by the court.
