Too drunk to drive? Call the cops for a free ride home for the holidays!

(WGNO) – Tis’ the season for parties, gatherings and booze.

And to make sure you make it home safely, there’s another option on the table if a designated driver, taxi cab or Uber is unavailable. -the cops!

It’s called the “Safe and Sober Ride Home Program” and the Slidell Police Department has been offering free rides to those who may have had a little too much to drink since 2012.

It’s an alternative to drinking and driving and it’s offered now until New Year’s no questions asked.

“I think it’s great. It’s all about safety. I work out here sometimes, I hang out here and too many people here leave in situations when they shouldn’t,” says Jordan Wilson.

And it’s as simple as picking up the phone and dialing this number: 985-643-3131.

And even if you don’t live in Slidell, officers will do what they can to arrange a ride home.

But your best bet police say is to plan ahead.

“It’s a great program, I’m glad they’re doing it. It keeps that small town feel,” says Tom Ray.

The Covington Police Department has a similar program, as does St. John the Baptist Sheriff’s Office , St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The NOPD is not participating.
