Tropical Storm Karl forms in Atlantic

Tropical Depression #12 was upgraded to Tropical Storm Karl Thursday evening. It is now the third named tropical system in the Atlantic, joining Ian and Julia. Tropical Storm Karl has 45 mph sustained winds and is moving West at 14 mph.

The storm is located approximately 575 miles West Northwest of the Cabo Verde Verde Islands, and is not affecting any land masses at this time. By Tuesday of next week we will be watching this storm closely as it nears the Caribbean. The forecast uncertainty grows when a storm is more than two days out, but Karl will progress steadily Westward through the weekend.

Meanwhile Tropical Storm Ian races off into the northern Atlantic, while Tropical Storm Julia will hover offshore of the South Carolina coastline through the weekend.  There is already a new tropical wave with a 20% chance for development in the next two days and 50% chance over the next five, forming off the coast of Africa.

We will monitor Karl as it strengthens through the weekend and post updates as necessary!
