NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) –  They’re warming up for a hot concert.

And it sounds like they’ll be sizzling like a summer night when the Warren Easton High School Jazz Band travels to Cuba.  The trip is in May.

It’s part of a cultural exchange program.

New Orleans kids go to Cuba.  Then Cuban kids will come to New Orleans.

For the high school kids from here, they were born to make music.

Senior Stephen Goodly says, “my dad plays the drums; my mom dances, we have four guitars in my house, a piano and a drum set.”

Stephen has been making music since he was 18 months old.

WGNO News with a Twist features guy Wild Bill Wood gets Stephen Goodly to show  you how he sounded as an 18 month old performing Flight of the Bumble Bee.

They’re learning about Cuba at Warren Easton.

They know they eat Cuban sandwiches there.

They know recent changes in relations with Cuba mean Americans can now travel there.

It’s a lot of pressure for a bunch of teenagers.

Director of Bands at Warren Easton, Asia Muhaimin says, “oh my goodness, enough pressure just to get this music right, so, let’s go.”

The trip will cost every kid $3,500.

To help raise the money, there’s a concert Friday March 4 at 7pm.

Warren Easton alum and actor Anthony Mackie will host the show.
