Dead battery ends New Orleans car theft, suspect still at large

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department reports a car theft ended with a dead battery, but the suspect remains on the loose. The case is the latest one to roll on the Wheel of Justice.

The crime began on March 21 at a home in the 3800 block of Hollygrove Street. According to police, someone stole a silver Toyota Camry. The car was recovered a few says later on March 27 at a convenience store in the 3400 block of South Carrollton Avenue. The NOPD also released security camera footage that shows some of what happened at the business.

In the video, the stolen car is seen, backed into a parking spot. Also, a pickup truck is seen in the video rolling up to the front of the Toyota. According to police, the battery died on the stolen car and the suspect asked a Good Samaritan for a jump. In the video, both drivers are unable to lift the release the latch and raise the hood of the pickup. Police also say that the two were looking for a pair of jumper cables.

According to police, the suspect was unable to jump start the car and left it at the scene. But he will still face charges once he’s arrested.
