GRETNA, La. (WGNO) – A Jefferson Parish judge ruled that petitioners seeking to force a recall of embattled Jefferson Parish President Mike Yenni will be allowed to collect signatures 100 feet away from voting sites.
At a hearing this morning, plaintiff and leader of “Recall Yenni, Inc” Attorney Robert Evans explained to Judge Glenn Ansardi that an agreement had been reached Wednesday night between himself, Jefferson Parish Registrar of Voters Dennis DiMarco, and State Attorney General Jeff Landry.
Evans told the judge that his lawsuit against DiMarco was moot, sinc DiMarco is only in charge of early voting, and that’s now over. As for Attorney General Landry, Evans said that Landry did not want to make a hasty decision, he wasn’t sure about the constitutionality of the law, so he was going to back off for now.
Evans, who began the recall effort shortly after Yenni admitted to sending inappropriate text messages to a 17-year-old boy.
For his part, Yenni has refused to step down, even after the Jefferson Parish City Council passed a vote of no confidence in his performance, and elected officials statewide have called for his resignation.
The recall effort has collected over 30,000 of the approximately 95,000 needed.
