4th quarter surge powers Newman to third straight boy’s basketball title

LAKE CHARLES, La. (WGNO) — Newman boys’ basketball claimed its third consecutive state title with a 59-46 win over University Lab in the Division III select championship Friday afternoon at Burton Coliseum.

The two-man game of RJ Livingston and Chris Cenac ignited a second half surge that saw Newman own the final 9:41 of regulation.

Newman outscored University 20-4 over that stretch, with an 18-0 run that started late in the third quarter and ended in the fourth. The Greenies outscored University Lab, 14-4 in the fourth and final frame.

Livingston and Cenac combine for 33 points in the win.

Chris Cenac was named Most Outstanding Player with a team-high 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

Senior Todd Jones finished with 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

The win solidifies Newman basketball as the best in Division III select and maybe the state with a three-peat the program has not seen since head coach Randy Livingston was a Greenie in the 1990s.
