THIBODAUX, La. (WGNO) — Nicholls State University has a new head baseball coach.

Brent Haring takes over as skipper just two weeks after former coach Mike Silva moved on to Arkansas State University.

Haring has more than 20 years of experience in and around baseball, most recently as LSU Baseball Director of Operations. Before that, he coached at BYU, where he says he learned to appreciate the baseball culture at Nicholls when the Cougars traveled to Thibodaux.

“I was totally blown away by the support and just the community, and the feeling that you feel at Ray Didier Field,” Haring recalled. “And, I remember going back to the hotel and telling the head coach, Coach Littlewood, ‘Coach, this place is awesome. This place is incredible.'”

The Colonels are coming off back-to-back championships in the Southland Conference. Haring says he hopes to improve on the team’s previous success.

“Mike was here for three years. We went to two regionals, you know. So that’s incredible. He’s one of the best baseball coaches in college baseball, in my opinion,” said Haring. “But my goal would be to take that a step further and get through a regional and get into the super-regional round and make a run.”
