David Patrick leaves Sacramento State to be the new associate head LSU basketball coach

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — LSU Basketball announces the hiring of a new associate head coach of the Tigers for the 2024-25 season.

Coach David Patrick is the former head coach of the Sacramento State Hornets. He announced he would be returning to Baton Rouge.

“I am incredibly excited to welcome David Patrick and his family to our LSU coaching staff,” said LSU Basketball head coach Matt McMahon. “He is an outstanding basketball coach and an elite recruiter who has impacted winning at every stop on his journey. Coach Patrick brings tremendous experience and success to our program. He has been a Division I Head Coach, an assistant coach for the Australian National Team winning a bronze medal in the 2021 Olympics, and has coached in the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 rounds of the NCAA Tournament.”

Patrick is a Bermuda native who moved to Baton Rouge, where he played basketball for Chapel Trafton in his senior year. After high school, Patrick attended Syracuse University in 1996 and transferred to what is now known as the University of Louisiana Lafayette, according to LSU Sports.

Patrick began coaching collegiate basketball after his high school coach brought him onto the staff at Nicholls State University. After a season at Nicholls, Patrick was named associate head coach at St. Mary’s University in Austin, Texas, LSU said in a release.

Patrick continued his career as a player scout for the Houston Rockets.

Patrick also was the assistant head coach at LSU from 2012 to 2016, under the direction of Coach Johnny Jones, according to Hornet Sports.
