NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Edna Karr High School’s first baseball player to be drafted leaves Wednesday. The Texas Rangers drafted Tyree Thompson in the 26th round.

The 19-year-old pitcher is heading to rookie ball in Arizona for the next three weeks. The following three weeks, he’ll be in Washington, D.C. Then, he’ll spend three weeks in the Dominican Republic. If he does well, then he’ll be called up.

Thompson said he’s been working toward this moment his entire life. On Wednesday, his dream becomes a reality.

“My family and coaches told me to play my game and do what I do. Do what’s best for me. I’m not going to be the best player on the field. I’m going to be playing with older men, so I just have to work harder and just out think more players,” Thompson said.

He’s pitching 92-93 mph.
