Ponchatoula has mountain to climb Friday night vs Acadiana

The two-time defending 5A champion comes to Ponchatoula’s Swamp Friday night and head coach Hank Tierney said they are as good as ever.

“Watch the tape, and it is no surprise they are the best team in 5A,” said Tierney of the Acadiana Wreckin’ Rams.

Acadiana drubbed Northside 49-0 in the opener for both teams.

Running back Ziggy Francis rushed for 143 yards on only 8 carries. The Wreckin’ Rams, who run the split back veer, threw only one pass in the game. Quarterback Myles Hutchinson completed it for 8 yards.

Ponchatoula does have an advantage preparing for Acadiana. The Green Wave runs the same offense. Last year’s quarterback Christian Campbell, signed with Georgia Tech after leading Ponchatoula to an unbeaten regular season, and a first-round playoff win.

“JT’s (Curtis) offense, nobody sees it very much,” said Tierney. “For people who don’t play against it, it can be very difficult to defend.”

This season, Ponchatoula is quarterbacked by senior Jeb Kraft, who was Campbell’s backup for three seasons.

Ponchatoula beat Sumner 35-7 in their opener.
