SLU football expectations are high

HAMMOND, La. (WGNO) — Southeastern Louisiana has been practicing each day as if they have something to prove. In two weeks, they’ll jump right into conference play at Northwestern.

“When you have a good team from last year, you have a lot of expectations to arise to. So, we’ve been working hard. Just trying to get the old team out so to see what the new team can bring to the table,” said wide receiver Chris Briggs.

Briggs has been itching to make an impact.

“I really just want to have fun you know. It’s going to be my first and my last. Two years without football. I’ve got a lot built up on the inside, I’m just ready to let a lot out and just have fun with the team,” he said.

The Franklinton High School product played three seasons at Southern Miss before transferring to SLU. He sat out last year to get familiar with the Lion system.

“After coming from Southern Miss, I’ve been in four offenses in 5 years. So that’s just a lot of switching and changing, signals that were the same mean different things, and I just wanted to get relaxed and comfortable,” he said.

On the other side of the ball, someone who’s already comfortable on the team is LSU transfer Defensive Back Micah Eugene. The Acadiana alum considers himself a leader on the field.

“I pretty much get the team pumped. If I’m excited, everyone’s excited. When it comes to hard work and all of that, I love being the guy to push my teammates and pick up everyone,” said Eugene.

The past two seasons, the Lions defense led the Southland Conference in fewest yards and fewest points allowed. Eugene said you can expect the same this year.

“I feel like our defense is going to be nasty, really nasty. we’ve been practicing real hard,” he said.

The goals this season are simple.

“To win the conference,” said Briggs.
