(WGNO) – It’s quite a feat for a sophomore. Rummel’s Thomas Vanderbrook won two events at the Allstate Sugar Bowl State Swim Meet last month.

Vanderbrook won the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 yard backstroke. Vanderbrook was the only Division 1 swimmer from the metro-area to claim two individual titles.

“I was very shocked at the result. I just pushed myself a lot. I was very proud with the end of result,” Vanderbrook said.

He also credits his parents, Will and Vicki, and his competitors for his successes. “I couldn’t do it without my parents and the people who were swimming against me and also my friends in the pool at practice.”

Vanderbrook says he eats right and swims two hours 6 days a week.

He understands that it will take even a healthier dose of self-discipline to repeat as a state champion next year. “Push myself ever harder and try to do the same thing this year but a little faster. Push myself in the pool.”

Thomas Vanderbrook of Rummel is this week’s New Orleans Voodoo Athlete of the Week.
