COVINGTON, La. (WGNO) – Hunter stadium at Saint Paul’s School is named for a man generous with his time and treasure. Dr. Patrick hunter was the Wolves team physician for 21 seasons. He and wife had 8 children. All 6 boys played football and graduated from St. Paul’s in a span of 10 years, 1976-1985.
Joseph hunter said his father had a very busy practice, but he knew his dad would be with him on the sidelines on Friday nights.
“In high school, whether it was football and basketball, he was going to be there,” remembers Joseph Hunter.
Dr. Hunter was not only generous with his time; he allowed scores of children to attend the school, who were not of means.
“Dr. Hunter used to give us five scholarships a year,” said former Principal Brother Jeffrey Calligan. “He would choose kids from the public system, who were poor, and the kids never knew, nor did the family. We would take them. It was wonderful.”
The Hunter name continues at St. Paul’s. Dr. Hunter’s grandson, Michael, was a senior tight end on the 2015 wolves.
“In the 80s Covington was a small community. They knew we were Hunters, and we took a lot of pride in that,” said Joseph Hunter.
