Holy Cross benefits from bizarre moment to win first Division II state soccer title since 2021

HAMMOND, La. (WGNO) — The Holy Cross Tigers defeated Ben Franklin, 2-1 in the Division II state championship game Friday night at Southeastern Louisiana University’s Strawberry Stadium.

Ben Franklin’s Jacob Chapital would score the first goal of the game on a free kick opportunity to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead at the half.

In the second half, Holy Cross would respond. Eric Santamaria would assist Grayson Sercovich with the game-tying goal near the 59th minute.

The biggest moment of the game would come in the 73rd minute. A routine pass back to the Ben Franklin goalkeeper would end with an own goal by the Falcons.

Holy Cross would take a 2-1 lead and hold on for their fifth state title in program history, their first since 2021.
