THIBODAUX, La. (WGNO) — Jacob Mayers was cut from his high school baseball team freshman year and didn’t start pitching until his senior year at St. Amant.
Things you wouldn’t have believed months ago when he gave the Alabama Crimson Tide more than they bargained for in the Tuscaloosa Regional.
Mayers went 5.2 innings and struck out eight in his final start of Nicholls’ 2023 campaign.
Nicholls fell 4-3 but Mayers was named to the Tuscaloosa Regional All-Tournament team.
“It was really exciting for me, especially being a freshman. I didn’t really think I was going to pitch much coming into the season, so being able to contribute any way I could was a really big part for me in that run. It was just it was crazy being able to pitch in high-leverage moments for my team and pitching on Sundays as a freshman was great, especially starting that regional. Having the trust of Coach [Mike] Silva and everybody else on the team knowing to get it done,” says Nicholls sophomore pitcher Jacob Mayers
Jacob Mayers’ regional performance capped off a phenomenal freshman year in Thibodaux, where he finished 9-1 overall with a 2.02 ERA and 105 strikeouts.
He earned five all-American honors and was named Southland Conference Freshman of the Year as the Colonels’ Sunday starter.
Now, Jacob has been promoted to Nicholls’ Friday night starter, looking to build on what was a stellar start to his college baseball career.
“It’s a big thing for me, being able to be a sophomore, being the Friday night guy at a school that’s on the come-up, I think still. I think we’re still knocking on the door to be in Omaha. We were five games away last year. I really thought we could have done it last year. I hope this year we got that same chance and I think we got even a better chance this year,” says Mayers.
Jacob Mayers will open Nicholls 2024 Southland title defense Friday at 6 p.m. when the Colonels kick off a three-game series against Sacred Heart.
