NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – 17-year-old Evan Cory plays volleyball at Holy Cross in New Orleans. And now, this ambitious teen wants to play with the best of the best in the AVP (The Association of Volleyball Professionals).

“When I first heard the AVP was coming to New Orleans I was really excited. And that’s when Derek first asked me to be his partner.”

“He’s pretty much the youngest guy I’ve ever played with.”

Derek Zimmerman from the West Bank is more than two decades older than his partner. Their age difference is a little unusual…

“Most of the leagues I would say the average age is 28. More of them are young professionals — and sometimes maybe old professionals.”

But both of these talented players looked past the age gap.

“Growing up, it’s like Derek’s the number one guy out here, he was the AVP star. When he first asked me I was kind of honored at first because that means I was getting good enough to play at that level.”

“You kind of look for this upcoming talent and he is. He’s young, he’s raw, he’s smart, he has a passion for the game, he loves to compete, he gets fired up — and I like that.”

No question, the two jumped at the opportunity to play together. But now the big question, will these two immensely talented players, with different styles, from different generations, come together and win.
