PITTSBURGH (WGNO) — Former LSU star, Paul Skenes, only needed ten MLB starts to earn a spot on the National League All-Star team.

The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Skenes No. 1 overall in the 2023 MLB Draft following the LSU Tigers national championship campaign.

Skenes was 13-2 with a 1.69 ERA and 209 strikeouts and was named both the top pitcher and player in the 2022-23 college baseball season.

He is now the first number one overall pick in MLB history to become al All-Star the following season.

Ten months after the draft, Paul Skenes made his MLB debut against the Chicago Cubs on March 11th and has been the Pirates most electric arm since then.

In ten starts, Skenes is 5-0 with 78 strikeouts in 59.1 innings (11.8 strikeouts per nine innings). He currently carries a 2.12 ERA.

In Friday’s 14-2 win over the New York Mets, Paul Skenes allowed just two earned runs and struck out eight batters in seven innings of action.

Following the performance, Skenes became the first player in MLB history to record seven or more strikeouts in nine of his first ten starts.

Paul Skenes next start is scheduled for Wednesday night against the Milwaukee Brewers.

First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m.
