PONCHATOULA, La. (WGNO) — The defending Division I Non-Select state champions open district 6-5A play with a dominant 74-28 win over the Covington Lions.

The Ponchatoula press was wreaking havoc on the Lions in the first half with the Green Wave jumping out to a 49-16 first-half lead.

Ponchatoula would hold on for their 16th win of the year.

Covington falls to 10-11.

The Green Wave entered the day 5th in the Division I Non-Select power rankings. They improve to 16-3 heading into the Carver Classic Saturday in New Orleans.

Here is the schedule:

Warren Easton will play Scotlandville at noon.

Landry will face Crescent City at 1:30 p.m.

Newman will match up with Ponchatoula at 3 p.m.

Carver will play Catholic of Baton Rouge at 4:30 p.m.
