Just days after the Ohio State Buckeyes defeated Notre Dame and were crowned the 2025 College Football Playoff national champions, reports from On3 sports emerged that star Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith was offered $4.5 million to enter the transfer portal.

Smith appeared to shut down those rumors with a repost on X, but Ohio State coach Ryan Day is clearly bothered by the fact that NCAA rules are seemingly not being enforced. NCAA rules prohibit teams and agents from persuading players to enter the transfer portal, but these rules have been difficult to enforce.

During an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show, Day did not directly address the rumors surrounding Smith, but spoke on the lack of enforcement regarding the NCAA's tampering rules.

"I think one of the big issues we have across the board in college football right now is enforcement," Day told Patrick. "... Enforcement is really strained right now, so until we start enforcing some of these rules, like you said, people can just call someone's agents or someone's parents and offer them a certain amount of money and then it goes from there. And that's just part of it ... That's one of the things to me that we've got to get addressed in college sports and college football because right now, there's virtually none. It's gotten worse as time has gone on."

When it comes to retaining players and keeping them from entering the transfer portal, Day prioritizes recruiting "great people and great families," but understands the need for players to earn their value.

"You have to value them, do everything you can to get what they deserve and what's fair," Day said. "... As coaches we're all looking for more guidelines on this, everything is so gray right now."
