NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — After serving as head coach of the Tulane women’s basketball program for 30 years, Lisa Stockton is retiring.
Stockon leaves Tulane basketball the all-time winningest women’s basketball coach in the state of Louisiana.
She recorded 591 wins at Tulane, leading the Green Wave to nine consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, 11 total, and 10 trips to the NIT.
Her 654 career wins place her at 27th on the NCAA’s all-time active wins list.
Stockton released a statement on social media following the announcement, saying “It has been the privilege of my lifetime to be the Tulane women’s basketball coach for the past 30 years. Since arriving in 1994, Tulane and New Orleans have become my family and my home. I have loved every moment of this amazing journey, but I have reached the finish line of my coaching career, and I am ready for my next chapter.”
Stockton added, “Today, I want to extend a special thanks to all of my former and current players and their families, whose lifelong connection is so meaningful to me. Undoubtedly, my proudest accomplishment is our 100% graduation rate for our student-athletes who finished their eligibility in our program. Their Tulane educations will continue to impact their lives for years to come.”
Stockton then thanked her current and former assistant coaches as well as the athletics department as a whole, saying “No one succeeds in anything meaningful in life without others, and my assistant coaches and staff over the course of 30 years have been critical to our success and impact on students and community. They’ve all been invaluable, and I can never thank them enough for all they have meant to me and to Tulane. I would also like to thank the presidents and athletic directors who I have had the privilege to work with over my career. Without support at the highest level, we would not have been successful.”
Lisa Stockton won 63 percent of her games at Tulane and averaged nearly 20 wins a season. Tulane saw just five losing seasons in her 30-year run.
She led the Green Wave to four Conference USA regular season titles and five Conference USA Tournament titles. She was a two-time Conference USA Coach of the Year and Louisiana Coach of the Year.
Lisa Stockton was inducted into the Conference USA Hall of Fame as a member of the 2023 class. Stockton is expected to discuss her decision during a press conference Thursday on campus.
Tulane athletics department says a national search is underway for the women’s basketball program’s seventh head coach.
