CALIFORNIA (WGNO) — A series of storms fueled by El Niño is slamming parts of California with heavy rain, threatening flash flooding and mudslides.
Areas in Ventura and Los Angeles counties that were burned in recent wildfires are particularly vulnerable and forecasters predict the bad weather will continue into the weekend.
However, not everyone’s complaining!
Our sister station KGO in San Francisco reports a High Surf Advisory is drawing lots of surfers to the coast trying to catch big waves.

The famed Mavericks break in Half Moon Bay was packed with surfers and sightseers.
The waves, at times reaching 60 feet, came in choppy.
At least one person was injured on a boat, along with surfer Garrett McNamara, who holds the record for largest wave ever ridden.

Down in Southern California, snowboarders like Christy Schmidt are absolutely giddy.
“Oh my god, powder’s amazing, I am so happy to be here. Happiest girl in the world. Fresh powder, there’s nothing better.”
Storms from the El Niño pattern dropped a foot of snow or more, at area ski resorts.
Snowboarders at Big Bear got to enjoy two and a half feet of white stuff that’s fallen, just since Wednesday.

Unfortunately, the snow also knocked out power to thousands of homes in the area.
