NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Get ready for another hot and steamy week across Southeast Louisiana and South Mississippi.
The forecast calls for high temperatures ranging from 90 to 95 degrees. Combined with high humidity levels, the heat index values (how hot it feels) are soaring between 105 and 110 degrees. Some areas around Lake Pontchartrain may even exceed 110 degrees.
There is a chance of late afternoon thunderstorms, especially along lake and sea breeze boundaries, late in the afternoon into early evening. These storms could bring some temporary relief from the heat, but their coverage is expected to be limited to about 30-40% of the area.
The forecast shows little change in temperature and humidity for the next 36 hours. This means another day of similar conditions, with high heat index values and the possibility of afternoon storms.
Heat advisories are in effect, and residents are advised to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. This includes staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and seeking air-conditioned environments.
Heat Safety Tips:
- Stay Indoors: Try to stay in air-conditioned places as much as possible.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Check on Others: Look out for those who are vulnerable, like the elderly and young children.
- Know the Signs of Heat Illness: Symptoms include dizziness, headache, muscle cramps, and nausea. Seek medical help if you or someone else shows these signs.
A trough (a dip in the atmospheric pressure) is expected to move closer to the area by Thursday or Thursday night. This could increase cloud cover and bring slightly lower temperatures by Friday into the weekend.
