(WGNO) – NASA is working to make big strides in forecasting hurricanes. Upgrades to satellite technology and the incorporation of GPS will give more precise locations.
For the first time, forecasters will be able to look at the inside of the system days in advance before making landfall.
The Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System uses a series of 8 micro satellites from the main space station these satellites measure the usual water temperatures, wind speeds, but the difference will be 4 GPS equipped satellites, these GPS satellites will make the mission much less costly.
Tropical hot spots will be the only thing these satellites will measure rather than the whole globe. That means updates in minutes rather than hours
NASA hopes to launch the CYGNSS mission next year.
