NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Another round of showers and storms will develop later this afternoon and evening. It looks like a lot of this activity will be near the I-10 and I-12 corridors. Expect locally heavy downpours that don’t move much. These will be hit or miss and will dissipate later this evening and tonight.
Another round of showers and storms will develop on Friday and provide some relief from the heat. After that a drier weekend is on the way with temperatures once again back in the low to mid 90s and heat index values well above 100.
We’re tracking two tropical waves, including one with a 80% chance of development. This wave is likely to form into a tropical depression or tropical storm by this weekend several hundred miles east of the Windward Islands.
However, it will contend with Saharan dust, which could limit its strength. Most forecast models predict the system will move west toward the Caribbean Sea and possibly into the Gulf of Mexico.
Another tropical wave in the west-central Caribbean Sea is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms as it moves rapidly westward at around 25 mph.
The NHC indicates that this system could gradually develop later this week as it moves over the western Caribbean Sea or the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. It currently has a 30 percent chance of developing.
