NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The National Weather Service reports May 2024 was the warmest May ever recorded at New Orleans International Airport.
According to NWS records, there were 27 days in May where the high temperature was above the normal daily high at the airport. There were only four days the high temperature observed was at or below the normal daily high temperature.
The average temperature, which is calculated using the high and low temperature for each day of the month, reached 80.6 degrees, surpassing the previous record of 80.1 degrees set in May 2000. This rise in temperature marks a new high in the airport’s records, which date back to 1947.
The warm trend continued throughout the spring season. Meteorological spring, encompassing March, April and May, recorded an average temperature of 72.8 degrees, making it the third warmest spring on record. The record for the warmest spring remains at 74.6 degrees, set in 2020.
Similarly, Baton Rouge experienced unprecedented warmth. May 2024 saw an average temperature of 80.7 degrees, breaking the previous record of 79.4 degrees from 1933.
Louisiana’s capital city experienced its warmest spring on record, with an average temperature of 72.6 degrees, surpassing the previous record of 72.1 degrees set in 2012. Baton Rouge’s temperature records date back to 1893.
