NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — LSU Health New Orleans is excited to announce the discovery of a non-addictive, non-toxic painkiller that will treat neuropathic pain and migraine headaches.
In Dr. Nicolas Bazan’s lab at the Neuroscience Center for Excellence, they discovered and developed a new painkiller that not only alleviates pain but there are no side effects, according to their research.
A new discovery that will no doubt help with an age-old problem.
“Painkillers are insufficient as time goes on to contain pain, so medications include some form of opioid, along with it and as time goes on addiction is developed because of the opioid present,” said Bazan.
With Bazan and his team’s development of their new non-opioid, non-addictive, non-toxic painkiller, they are eliminating dangerous side effects.
“The findings of a new molecule like this of course is exciting and there is tremendous potential,” Bazan said.
Their research findings were recently published in “Scientific Reports.”
“Translate the discovery into patients. This paper includes phase one, clinical trial just successful completed. The patients showed no issues of any kind of side effects, blood pressure. Our chemical is non-toxic to liver and kidney,” he said.
Currently, Bazan is working with his son, Dr. Hernan Bazan, the co-founder of South Rampart Pharma on phase two accelerated clinical trials and on advancing this FDA-approved safer painkiller to the market.
“To really create this new molecule, we hope it is a contribution to a major issue in society, which is pain and addiction,” said Bazan.
