NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A man was arrested after allegedly driving into a building and fatally hitting a woman in the St. Roch area on Monday, March 11.

The New Orleans Police Department reported that officers responded to a report of a burglary in the 1100 block of St. Roch Avenue near Marais Street around 11 a.m.

At the scene, officers said they found an SUV crashed into a building and an unresponsive woman inside the building. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

NOPD officials said the crash was initially being investigated as a traffic fatality but later reclassified it as a homicide.

Following an investigation, NOPD detectives identified 31-year-old Anthony Cooper as the suspect and a warrant was issued for his arrest on a charge of second-degree murder.

Cooper was later arrested and booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center.
