NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Starting on Saturday, June 1, the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority will halt the operation of the Chalmette Ferry in order to conduct a drydock inspection.
According to New Orleans RTA officials, the inspection is mandated by the United States Coast Guard. They add that all ferries that travel in freshwater environments must undergo this inspection every five years to provide safety to passengers on board.
During the inspection, RTA officials report that the Chalmette Ferry will undergo maintenance on its parts, such as tail shafts, propellers, pumps and piping and more. Additionally, the ferry will not be in operation for a minimum of 90 days.
