Proposed bill would rename part of St. Tammany Parish’s Highway 11 after Jimmy Buffett

ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. (WGNO) — A proposed bill would change the name of part of a St. Tammany Parish bridge to honor Jimmy Buffett.

The bill, written by Louisiana Sen. Patrick McMath, would change the name of a portion of Louisiana Highway 11 in St. Tammany Parish to the Jimmy Buffett “Changes in Latitude” Memorial Crossing.

According to a fiscal note, the proposed law would also require the Department of Transportation and Development to put up appropriate signs reflecting the name change.

The bill was pre-filed on Feb. 26 and introduced in the Senate on March 11.

According to the bill digest, if passed, the proposed law would be effective on Aug. 1, 2024.

Buffett, who was known for his “beach bum” style of soft rock and hit song “Margaritaville,” died on Sept. 1, 2023.

Buffett reportedly died after a battle with a rare skin cancer.
